Selecting a Kitchen or Bath Designer in OKC

For Remodeling or New Construction

Thinking of hiring a designer?  What are the options – Designer, Decorator, Licensed?  How do you narrow down the choices?

When Designing or Remodeling a kitchen or bath, there are three categories of projects:

Makeover

Total Replacement

New Design

Which path you are taking can impact which person you select for your project. To begin, let’s explore these three categories:

Makeover:

Modify what you already have (for Remodeling). Change the 27″ wall oven cabinet to a 30″, modifying the adjacent cabinets as well. Replace countertops and backsplash, and maybe hardware or lighting. Minor to major, this category keeps the structure and layout with some alterations. In this case study, we replaced all doors and drawer fronts, countertops and backsplash, floor tile and appliances. We added undercabinet lighting, new room lighting, then painted the upper cabinets white and faux finished the lower cabinets to resemble walnut. Stunning impact with minimal disruption.

Pull and Replace:

This is where the majority of remodelers and contractors work.  Replace the old with new.  Same layout, same design.  Maybe change small details here or there. New cabinetry, countertops, etc. In this case study, our homeowners liked the current layout but wanted a better flow to the kitchen while preparing meals. Brenda relocated the oven to a different wall, added an Induction cooktop, and placed our Galley Ideal Workstation sink for better meal prep at the window. All new components in a similar footprint.

Total New Design:

AnewdesignshouldA New Design should begin with a study in how you use your current space and what changes can be made to enhance the way you will live in the new room. In remodeling, this often includes structural wall modifications or opening the slab to relocate plumbing. We’ve done it. A lot. For new construction kitchen designs, we will often modify what the architect drew to improve the flow and aesthetics of the new kitchen. Or in new construction bathrooms with a closet, architects will often draw a closet that looks good on paper, but is tight and cramped once filled with cloths on hangers.

In this bathroom remodel, our client wanted a walk-in shower with an overall spa feel for luxurious bathing. After listening and exploring ideas, Brenda and Megan redesigned the space to bring the free standing tub in front of the shower to be more prominent in the design. This allowed for a path to create the walk-on shower with large seating and lots of amenities. Stunning change.

Do you go with a Designer or Decorator?

Historically, a decorator was a person that selected colors, fabrics, and textures to finish off a space. A Designer is usually someone with specialized education or testing to show that not only can they select the finishes, but they can also create new spaces, modify existing spaces, consider the human impact of each decision and so much more. Whereas a decorator can be a part-time job, Designers typically are full-time professionals that continue their education through the lifetime of their career.

So which do you choose? A decorator may have experience with a kitchen or bath Makeover, and maybe even a Pull & Replace. More than likely, a Total New Design would be better suited for an experienced Designer with the training and track record of major alterations.

In our 25 years, we have done all 3 of these – hundreds of times. By far, we are called in for the total transformation. Beginning with a functional lifestyle analysis, our design team studies how you use your space and considers how they think it could be improved. Then they apply their specialized training, testing, continued education, and years of experience to create a new space that enhances how you live in that space.

We are proud of the fact that Brenda and Megan, our lead Designers, are both Licensed and Registered with the State of Oklahoma as Interior Designers. This three day exam tests their competency with creating spaces and considering all impacts of the decisions they recommend. Before even being allowed to sit for this exam, the state requires a designer to either hold a Bachelors degree in Interior Design plus 2 years experience, or have 6 years full-time experience as a designer in the field (much more knowledge is required than a “registration” type license they give to Builders or Roofers).

Our design team also consists of Maureen and Cheyenne, bringing designs to life with their CAD renders. These renders are critical to ensuring a design is created as you hoped – you can see it before we start swinging hammers. Once complete, these drawings, plans, and renders provide a road map for our build team to show them what we are building. These four ladies have created dream come true spaces for hundreds of clients in OKC, Edmond, Norman, and even border to border within Oklahoma over the years.

As true designers, our team specializes in listening. They are passionate about creating new spaces – both during a remodel, or when designing a new home – that is personal to you. This means they study the way you use your space and they create a room to improve the function and enhance your life – all with an eye toward the aesthetics of the space. They are providing so much more than simply pulling and replacing the cabinets. The space-planning they provide truly changes the way people use the rooms. With over 2 decades experience creating and planning new spaces (Each! Not cumulative…), functional changes are incorporated into just about every home we are invited into. Sometimes small changes can make a huge impact – other times a complete room rearrangement is in order. Rest assured we have the experience and reputation to design and create your space – and make it right.

As stated above, designing a room to function and enhance your family is crucial to the success of a project. When designing or rebuilding a kitchen, you are about to spend a lot of money – you really need to know it will be designed to your liking. Our designers bring their education, experience, and ideas to work on a project, creating the look and solving the challenges along the way. Select slowly, research your options, and give us a call to talk about your project. Even if we are not selected to design your space, you will be glad you spoke with a professional about your situation.
